Holy Family School's Music Program seeks to develop in each child an understanding and passion for music both as performers and listeners. The goals and activities vary by grade level, teaching students at each level to become familiar with music and its elements. Children have music classes multiple times throughout the school week and their music skills can be observed in the Christmas and Spring concerts and other musical programs throughout the year.


K through 3rd grade - The Basics - General Music
At this level students experience and develop skills of music appreciation and its elements including,
 
Listening - both passively and actively
Enjoying and learning correct methods of playing rhythm instruments
Recognizing basic notes by name/value
Understanding basic rhythms Recognizing differences in tone colors
Understanding basic dynamics
Writing and creating music with written and spoken symbols

Grade 4
Continues with the basics of General Music and begin their instrumental exploration with the recorder. Fourth grade students are also introduced to the instruments of the Orchestra.

Grade 5
Also continues to focus on basics and applying that knowledge to playing the recorder. Musicianship skills will be emphasized along with the basic fundamentals of music. They will also be studying an overall view of Music History.

Grade 6, 7, and 8
Will apply basic knowledge and skills of music theory to Keyboarding. Students will learn basic piano skills, simple scales and learn to play a simple song from memory along with simple composition. Sixth grade will continue with a more in depth look at Music History while seventh and eighth grade continue with the study of the keyboard and composition.
